Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen, with Pastor Jason Letsche officiating. Burial will follow at the Remsen Community Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation with family present will be Friday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. all at the church. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Memorial service will be livestreamed at www.fischfh.com
Arnold the son of John and Ella (Seel) Maass was born on September 15, 1933 on a farm southeast of Remsen. Arnold was baptized on November 12, 1933 and was confirmed on March 30, 1947 at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen. He attended Remsen Twp. #2 country school until 1944 when the family moved to Remsen and then attended Remsen Public School. Arnold graduated from Remsen High School in 1950. He worked in the Remsen and Sioux City area until he enlisted in the Army in 1954 and served in the U.S. Missile Defense System. After being discharged in 1956 he worked in Chicago at a packing plant and then the Marcus area for the Dorr family. In 1959 Arnold started farming with his brother Kenneth southeast of Remsen.
On December 1, 1961, Arnold was united in marriage to Sharon Heesch at Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen. Arnold served the Lord throughout his life and served in many positions at Christ Lutheran Church. He was active in the International Lutheran Laymen's League Served in several positions on the Iowa District West Board including President. Arnold served on the Board of Directors of American Bank of Remsen, Citizens State Bank of Postville, Iowa, Plymouth Co. Farm Bureau, Plymouth Co. Farmers Home Administration and Plymouth Co. Extension Committee. He served on the Remsen Cemetery Board for 33 yrs, and was President for 7 yrs. He also served on the Happy Siesta Resident Advocate Committee. Faith and family were important to him, especially time with his precious grandchildren.
Arnold is survived by his wife Sharon of Remsen; two sons, Terry (Amy) Maass of Remsen, Mark (Susan) Maass of Columbus, NE; daughter-in-law, Lisa Maass of Ventura, CA; six grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Jacques) Arnoult of Auburn, WA, Megan (special friend Chris Wolf) of Remsen, Nicole of Des Moines, Andrew & Joshua Maass of Remsen and Noah Maass of Ventura, CA; his brother, Kenneth (Bethene) Maass of Remsen; he is also survived by his brother-in-law Lloyd Nitzschke of Omaha, NE; many nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Maass; parents, John & Ella Maass; three sisters, Loretta (August) Nitzschke, Eilene (Pat) Pepperd, Wilma (Joe) Ritchie; brother, Floyd (Edna) Maass; sister-in-law Gloria Nitzschke; father and mother-in-Law, William and Florence Heesch; Infant brother-in-law, John Heesch.
