Dennis was born on February 28, 1961, in Ankeny, IA, to Marie Avery and Ron Avery. He grew up in Ankeny and later married his loving wife, Sandy Grady, on October 21, 1983. Together, they raised one son, Neil, and two daughters, Stephanie and Christine. Their children went on to bless them with seven amazing grandchildren and a life full of love.
Dennis was a welder who loved working on his cars, watching NASCAR every Sunday, golfing, and spending time with his grandchildren. Neil, Steph, and Miss Chris spent hours with him at the driving range and driving him around Floyd Golf Course.
Dennis meant the world to his grandkids. He spent hours watching Henry Danger with Sydney (“Baby”), giving tips to Declyn (“The Happ”) on building his Lego sets, hanging out in the room he built just for Penelope (“Wee”), where they sometimes talked about school and sports, and checking in to hear all about AvaLynne’s (“Baby Jo”) wrestling events. He played with Freya (“Mini Miss Chris”) and her “babies,” and proudly taught her how to give “knucks.”
He is survived by his three children: Neil (Sarah) Avery and Stephanie (Greg) Gemberling, both of Sioux City, IA; and Christine (Ian Saari) Avery of Saint Paul, MN. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Kalla, AvaLynne, Khloe, Penelope, Declyn, Sydney, and Freya. Other survivors include his aunt, Shirley Andre; his faithful sidekick and dinner companion, Ginger; and his siblings, nieces, and nephews.
He will be missed by all who knew him—especially his grandchildren.
Dennis was preceded in death by his wonderful and caring wife, Sandy Avery; his mother, Marie Davis; and his in-laws, Ray and Agnes Grady.
