Donald M. Galles, 62 years old, of Remsen, IA, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars, IA, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Graveside military services will be conducted by Post 220 American Legion & Post 3328 V.F.W. of Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., and vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Don was born Dec. 7, 1946, at LeMars, IA, the son of Milton & Arlene (Konz) Galles. He was raised and educated in Remsen. He attended St. Mary Catholic School at Remsen, graduating from St. Mary High School in 1965. Don entered the U. S. Army National Guard on June 19, 1965, serving in the 133rd Infantry & in the Vietnam War in 1969. Don received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on May 27, 1969 in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged on April 22, 1971. Don then returned home to Remsen to farm with his father and brother.
Don was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, American Legion, V.F.W color guard, Sportsman’s Club all of Remsen.
Survivors include: His mother Arlene Galles of Remsen; One brother, Dale Galles & his wife Rose of Marcus, IA; Seven sisters, Mary Block & her husband Pete of Sioux City, IA, Marilyn Bunkers & her husband Terry of Remsen, Audrey Weiler & her husband Gilbert Jr. of LeMars, IA, Carol Christoffel & her husband Gary of Granville, IA, Bonnie Meyer & her husband Stan of Ireton, IA, Laurie Schroeder & her husband Alan of Granville, IA, Karen Portz & her husband Randy of Remsen; 42 nieces & nephews, as well as several great-nieces & nephews, numerous cousins & friends.
He was preceded by: his father Milton, Paternal grandparents, Mike & Anna (Schneiders) Galles; Maternal grandparents Joseph & Emma (Mousel) Konz; Two nephews, Dustin Christoffel & Travis James Weiler; One niece, Angel Bunkers.
Casket Bearers will be, Ryan Block, Andrew Portz, Randy Schroeder, Cody Bunkers, David Christoffel, Troy Weiler, Matt Galles, Tyler Meyer.
