Joseph Durband

Joseph A. Durband, 91, of rural Cleghorn, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2023, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at Most Holy Name of Mary Parish - Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Father Timothy Pick will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Holy Name Cemetery in Marcus. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 17, 2023, at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Tuesday.

Joseph Anthony Durband was born June 21, 1932, near Struble, Iowa, the son of Edward and Mary (Curtis) Durband. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Remsen, Iowa. Following graduation, Joe enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean War. He returned from the Army and took a position in road construction and also assisted his brother with farming.

On October 1, 1966, Joe and Janice Delaney were united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. They farmed near Cleghorn, Iowa until the 1980’s. Joe then went to work at Wilson’s Meat Packing in Cherokee, Iowa. He retired from Tyson Foods 29 years later. Joe was an avid sports fan and closely followed the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 56 years, Janice Durband of Cleghorn, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Ann and Gary Janssen of Spencer, IA; grandchildren, Eric (Vicki) Janssen of Sheldon, IA, Justin Janssen of Spencer, IA and Alex (Brittany) Janssen of Royal, IA; great-grandchildren, Brenn, Shay, Jaxon, Axel and Kaya; a sister, Mary Gengler of Sioux Falls, SD; a brother, Tom (Fern) Durband of Dixson, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James and Earl; and a brother-in-law, Don Gengler.
