Mary Jane Haines

January 30, 1928 — August 7, 2018

Mary Jane Haines, 90, of Waukee, Iowa, formerly of Marcus, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the Village at Legacy Pointe Nursing Home in Waukee. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Holy Name Cemetery in Marcus. Fr. Bill McCarthy will officiate.

Mary Jane was born on January 30, 1928 in Remsen, Iowa to John T. and Jane Frances (Bunkers) Schultz. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Remsen where she was a member of the Championship Volleyball Team. On April 16, 1951, Mary Jane and Don E. Haines were united in marriage. The couple moved to Marcus where Don worked as a chiropractor and Mary Jane was a homemaker. They lived in Marcus for over 60 years where they raised their family.

Mary Jane loved to read and always had a book with her. She played cards several times a week, mostly for fun with her neighborhood posse (that group could laugh together better than anyone), but also played in pinochle tournaments from time to time. She was an avid golfer and bowler, winning many tournaments in both sports.

She was a member of Holy Name Parish and St. Ann’s Guild the entire time she lived in Marcus. Mary Jane was also a member of the Marcus Library board for many years and delivered Meals-on-Wheels. She spent many summers at Lake Okoboji enjoying bonfires, nightly neighborhood cocktail hour and walking and collecting cans with her good friend Colleen.

Several years ago, Mary Jane moved to Des Moines to be close to her daughter and son. She lived most recently at the Village at Legacy Pointe Nursing Home, where she spent her time enjoying music and making the staff laugh everyday with her humor.

Mary Jane will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Mary (Richard) Tartaglia of Chandler, AZ; Jean (Stuart) Kaplan of Scottsdale, AZ; Joanne (Carl) Konz of West Des Moines, IA; her son, David Haines of West Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Bill Means, Steve Means, Kevin Bruno, Lisa Romero, Carlee Konz, Ali Konz and Kaila Konz; 8 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don E. Haines in 1986; sons, Robert in 1989 and Richard in 2007; her infant daughter, Janice; her parents; all 4 siblings, Marguerite Tegeler, Dorothy Lange, Lee Schultz and Donna Nelson.
