Garland Hohbach

May 3, 1930 — January 26, 2013

Marcus, Iowa – Garland Hohbach, 82, of Marcus, Iowa passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus, Iowa. Rev. Don Meyer will officiate. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Marcus with military honors provided by F.I. Goodburn Post #517 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Tuesday. Honorary Pallbearers will be Garland’s great-grandchildren and pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

Garland Louis Hohbach was born on May 3, 1930 near Marcus, Iowa, to Harold and Frances (Mundy) Hohbach. He attended grade school at Tilden #2 in Cherokee County. After completing the eighth grade he attended confirmation school at Trinity Lutheran Church and finished his education at Marcus High School.

Garland was drafted into the U.S. Army on October 3, 1951. He was stationed overseas at Dachau, Germany. He earned his Honorable Discharge on September 11, 1953. On February 27, 1955, Garland and Marlys Hennings of Moneta, Iowa were united in marriage. They made their home on the Hohbach family farm to assist Harold and Frances with farming. They later moved to Hartley, Iowa. Together they farmed near Hartley from 1957 to 1969 and then returned to the family farm near Marcus. In 1991, Garland and Marlys retired and moved into Marcus.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He served as an Elder and on the Cemetery Committee for many years. Garland loved his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends, watching TV game shows and puzzle books.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Marlys of Marcus; his sons Kenny and his wife Mary of Marcus and Kirby and his wife Julee of Marcus; a daughter, Kayla Genson and her husband Stuart of Linn Grove, IA,; grandchildren, Chellene Tewes and her husband Ryan of Paullina, IA, Dustin Hohbach of Marcus, Courtney Schweitzer and her husband Brad of Paullina, IA, Taylor and Chandler Hohbach of Marcus; step-grandson Chase Hainey of Vermillion, SD; six great-grandchildren Treven and Brielle Tewes, Brayden Paskert, Cohen Hohbach, Quinn and Hudson Schweitzer; a brother Clarence Hohbach and his wife Nancy of Marcus; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by is parents; an infant son Craig; and a sister Mary.
