James D. Moritz, 88 passed away on Thursday evening, May 21st at Accura Healthcare in LeMars, where he had been a resident since December 2019.
Private Mass of Christian Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA with Father William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen, IA. Viewing with no family present and keeping to the COVID-19 restrictions of 10 people at a time will be 12-2 p.m. Tuesday at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Condolences may be sent online to

Jim was born Feb. 13, 1932 on a farm NE of Remsen to Christopher and Casilda (Frank) Moritz. He attended St. Mary’s grade and high school graduating in 1949. He joined the Army in 1953 and after basic training was stationed in Bamburg, Germany where he served until his discharge in 1955. He then returned to Remsen and farmed with his father until his father’s passing. He continued farming on the family farm living with his mother.
Jim enjoyed playing cards with friends, especially pinochle. He was a Forester and belonged to the KC’s and VFW. Jim enjoyed watching the squirrels and the birds outside the patio window and especially enjoyed seeing the turkey roam around.
In March 1989 he married Fae Groff at St. Mary’s in Remsen. They were blessed with a son, Christopher, in August 1990.
Jim farmed until his retirement in 1997 when the family moved into town.
He is survived by his wife, Fae, son, Christopher and his wife, Jennifer and his soon to be grandchild. He would have been so proud and happy to be a Grandpa. He is also survived by his brother, Don and sister, Maxine Pottebaum, brother-in-law, Dan (Clarice) Groff, sister-in-law, Marietta Alesch, sister-in-law, Chris Wearth and nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher and Casilda Moritz, brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Delores Moritz, brothers-in-law, Ken Ludwig and Cecil Pottebaum, niece, Roxanne Moritz, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roman and Marian Groff, brothers-in-law, Robert Arens, Kenneth G. Alesch and Larry Wearth.
Casket bearers will be David, Mike, Steve & Rich Moritz.
In lieu of flowers or a memorial, please make a donation in Jim’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Diabetes Association or St. Mary’s.
