John Bernard “Jack” Shea, age 82 of Marcus, IA, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2022 at his home in Marcus.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, IA with Fr. Timothy Pick officiating, Fr. Eugene Murray concelebrating and Deacon Gerald Bertrand assisting. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen, IA. Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, there will be a K of C Rosary and 4th Degree Chalice Presentation at 5 p.m. then a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at the church in Marcus. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Jack was born May 28, 1940, the son of Roman and Vivian (Sudtelgte) Shea. He was raised on a farm between Granville and Paullina, IA. He attended country school and then St. Joseph’s grade and high schools in Granville where he graduated in 1959. He worked as a farm hand both at home and for neighbors and then took a job at Norbert Goergen’s Conoco station in Granville. Jack attended the Sioux City Barber College and worked his trade in Le Mars before buying a shop in Marcus in 1963. During this time, he joined the naval reserve.
Jack and Maxine Mohning were married April 28, 1962 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, IA. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2022.
In 1974 Jack became a full-time employee at Sand Seed Service, Inc. While there he took classes, studied, and earned his certified crop advisor certificates both on the state and federal levels.
He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, active member of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus, Eagle Scout Board of Review, an altar server at Holy Name Church, active member of the Marcus Historical Society. He also previously served on other boards and organizations including Siouxland GEAPS.
Jack enjoyed many outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and golfing. He enjoyed gathering with family whether it be cousins, the kids, “the brothers” or other members.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maxine of Marcus, IA; seven children, Maureen Shea-Andersh and Brad Andersh Peoria, IL, Terry and Karla Shea Waverly, IA, Ann and Brian Marie Germantown, TN, Brian and Missy Shea Meriden, IA, William “Bill” and Stella Shea Colorado Springs, CO, Robert “Bob” Shea, Des Moines, IA and Dan and Brooke Shea of Ames, IA; nineteen grandchildren; one sister, Karen Smith of Pella, IA; five brothers, David Shea of San Jose, CA, James (Betty) Shea of Plattsmouth, NE, Dan (Kate) Shea of Marion, NC, Patrick (Rita) Shea of Bloomfield, NY and Michael (Donna) Shea of Le Mars, IA; one sister-in-law Rebecca Nelson-Shea of Eveleth, MN and one brother-in-law, Robert Mohning of Phoenix, AZ; he is also survived by his aunt Mary Lou Muller of Peoria, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Timothy Shea, one sister Mary Croatt and her husband Dennis Croatt, a sister-in-law Pamela Shea, a brother-in-law Bill Mohning, a sister-in-law Donna Mohning and a brother-in-law Jim Smith.
Casket Bearers will be; Ian Marie, Michael Marie, John Shea, Jeremy Shea-Wilbur, Josh Croatt, Kevin Shea and Alex Shea.
Honorary Bearers will be The Knights of Columbus and Jack's Sunday golf Friends; Doug Lauters, Joe Rosener, Jim Pearson, Dr. Steve Schachterle and Bud Busch.
