Joseph Michael Gaul, age 86 of Granville IA passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, Iowa with Rev. Daniel Greving officiating and Deacon Dan Goebel assisting. Burial will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Granville, Iowa. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Granville Veterans. Visitation with family present will be 9:30 until service time on Friday, at the Church in Granville. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Joe was born on July 10, 1938, the son of John “J.P.” and Sylvia (Fischbach) Gaul in Granville, IA. He was raised in Granville and attended St Joseph Catholic School in Granville, graduating in 1956. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines and later received a medical discharge. He then lived with Ivan & Clare Pottebaum for several years before getting his own home in Granville. For many years Joe drove a transport truck for Goergen Oil Company.
On July 9, 1977, he married Catherine (Rock) Lindstrom at Sheldon, IA. Together they took bus trips with the Spirit Club, cruise trips, enjoyed polka dances and time with family & friends. Cathy passed away on April 19, 2009, after 32 years of marriage.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, The Granville Veterans, Catholic Order of Foresters and the NRA. He was a Chicago Cubs fan, collector of Henry firearms and loyal supporter of local restaurants. Joe was known as a man of few words ad a dry sense of humor.
He is survived by, his step-sons, Timothy (Gretchen) Lindstrom of Goodyear, AZ, Brent (Sheila) Lindstrom of Baton Rouge, LA; 3 step-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; his siblings; Clare (Ivan) Pottebaum of Granville, IA, Kathy (Gayle) Hopkins of Clarinda, IA, Marjorie Childers of Escondido, CA, Peter (Barbara) Gaul of Alexandria, VA, Ted (Elaine) Gaul of Des Moines, IA; brother-in-law, Marvin Rock of Boise, ID; many nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Cathy; his siblings, Gert Dekker, Sr. Verna Gaul OSF, Ruth (Henry) Block, Joan (Jim) Meaden, Ellie (Loren) Crawford, Mark Gaul, Angela Uhrich, Rose (Marshall) Nelson-Wilkes; nephew, Jim Homan; sister-in-law, Evelyn Rock; brothers-in-law, Bill Childers, Eugene Nelson, Loren Crawford, Harry Block, Jim Meaden.
Casket bearers will be Jim Lange, Chris Lange, Andrew Homan, Gerry Budden, Glenn Reichle, Matt Cooper and Alex Llanos.
