Joseph Peter Broderson, 84, of Remsen, died Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 3, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating and Deacon Rick Roder assisting. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery in Centerville, SD. Graveside military honors will be conducted by The Frank Holcombe American Legion Post 43. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2014. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Joe was born January 7, 1930, the son of Herman and Alice (Dunn) Broderson.
On February 19, 1952, Joseph entered the United States Navy. He proudly served his country aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bataan during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on January 24, 1956.
In 1957, he married Helen Mitchell. Joseph was a commercial artist for the advertising agency of Leo Burnett in Chicago, Illinois. He continued to paint and draw throughout the years. He was also an enormous animal lover, and later owned a dog-grooming business in Le Mars, Iowa. Joe was fond of horticulture and tending to his garden. He also enjoyed cooking with his daughter Liz and grandchildren.
Survivors include three daughters, Cathy Thompson and her husband, Randy, of Winnipeg, Ontario, Canada; Elizabeth Wolf and her husband, Michael, of Remsen; Cynthia Broderson of Glenwood, Iowa; one son, Damian Broderson; his sister, Dolores Steele of Clayton, NC; many grandchildren; and one great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Helen Broderson; brother Robert Broderson; daughter Jean Broderson; daughter Carolyn Rosales; and granddaughter Rose Thompson.
