Marcus, Iowa – Floreine B. Kass, 76, of Marcus, Iowa passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2012 at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa. Rev. Don Erickson will officiate. Burial will follow at Marcus Amherst Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus with the family present from 2-5 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Monday.
Floreine Bernadine Carlson was born on December 7, 1935 near Meriden, Iowa, the daughter of Otto A. and Alma D. (Popenhagen) Carlson. She attended country school near her home and graduated from Marcus High School. Following her education, Flo worked as a housekeeper.
On April 7, 1957, Flo and Walter Edwin Aggers Sr. were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. The couple lived for a brief time in Southern California while Walter served in the United States Navy. They later lived in South Florida and then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1970. During these years, Flo worked at a restaurant, as a registered nurse and as a youth recreational director. In 1976 they relocated to Marcus and Flo took a position at Alco in Cherokee, Iowa. She then took a position with K-Products in Marcus as a product inspector. Walter passed away on April 13, 1999.
Flo found a position at the Marcus Golf Course. It was there that she met Ray Kass, who was working as a greens keeper. The couple married on June 10, 2004 in Marcus where they continued to make their home.
Flo was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and all types of craft projects. She was an excellent cook and liked gardening. While in Florida, Flo was an accomplished gymnastics coach with an award winning team. She also taught archery and golf.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Ray Kass of Marcus, IA; her son Walter E. “Eddie” Aggers III and his wife LeAnn of Bristow, OK; a granddaughter Sabrina; 22 step-grandchildren; 9 step-great-grandchildren; step-children Linda Schanus of Ankeny, IA, Larry and Sarah Kass of Sumner, IA, Ron and Candy Kass of Lawton, IA and Beverly and Larry Fehner of Smithville, MO; sisters Ruth Oliver of Sioux City, IA, Gladys and Gene Meyer of Tempe, AZ, and Charlene and Jerry Letsche of Marcus, IA; brothers Clifford and Doris Carlson of Aurelia, IA, Stanley Carlson of Bend, OR and Rev. Lester Carlson of Oliver, B.C., Canada.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Aggers Sr.; son, Walter Aggers Jr.; a step-son-in-law Edward Schanus; brothers, Leland and Norman; and a sister-in-law, Bernice Carlson.
