Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023 at Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen, with Pastor Jason Letsche and Pastor Don Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at the Remsen Community Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Tuesday from 4-6 p.m., there will be a prayer service at 6 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church.
Ken was born March 1, 1936 the son of Carl & Nora (Mohning) Kohler. He attended Remsen Public School until the 8th grade. At the age of 14 he began farming with his father. Ken moved to California when he was 18 and worked in a service repair shop for 1 year. Ken moved back to Remsen to farm with his father.
On May 11, 1962 he married Connie Weiss. In 1963 they moved to the family farm and raised 5 children. They celebrated 50 years of marriage on May 11, 2012. Connie passed away on Nov. 17, 2012.
In 1964 Ken opened a TV repair shop called Ken’s TV. He operated the business until Jan of 1972. At this time, he devoted his life to farming full time.
Ken was known as the “Mr. Fix It Guy”. He ran his own chainsaw repair shop until his death. He also cut down trees and ground out tree stumps. At the age of 86 he was still sharpening chainsaw blades and repairing small engines.
On Nov. 30, 2013 he married Margaret Gengler. The love these two had for each other was so special. They were always holding hands. Ken and Marge spent several years wintering in Texas. They loved to go out to eat, attend sporting events and riding their motorcycle. They loved to attend their family weddings and birthday parties.
Ken was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church rural Marcus, IA, and most recently Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, spending time with family, traveling, wintering in Texas and telling jokes.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Marge Kohler of Remsen; three children, Deb (Tim) Bonnstetter of Remsen; son, Doug Kohler and his special friend, Tomeeko Young of Biloxi, MS, Dean Kohler of Remsen; 9 grandchildren, Amanda Ruden, Zack and Autum Bonnstetter, Brian and Kelley Kohler, Jacob, Brittney, Brandon Kohler and Tara (Kurtus) Leavell; 8 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces & nephews; step-children, Bob (Doris) Gengler of Remsen, IA, Dan (Suzie) Gengler of Resmen, IA, Ann Gengler of Oyens, IA, Henry Canup of Florida, Mike Gengler of Remsen, IA, Carole (Dick) Ludwig of Sioux City, IA, Carla (John) Weber of Marcus, IA, Karyn (Steven) Flaspohler of Moulton, IA; 25 step-grandchildren; 27 step-great-grandchildren; 4 step great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Teresa (Don) Mordhorst of Soldier, IA; one brother-in-law, Dennis (Patti) Weiss of Omaha, NE
Ken was preceded in death by and joyfully reunited with his parents; his wife Connie; his son David; his daughter Diane in infancy; father & mother-in-law, Harold & Loretta Weiss; sister, Carol (Red) Bergin; step-son Randy Gengler; step-daughter Kathy Canup.
Casket bearers will be Jacob, Brandon, Brian, Brittney and Kelley Kohler, Amanda Ruden, Zack and Autum Bonnstetter.
