Marcel “Jinx” Matgen, 95, of Remsen passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 at Floyd Valley Health Care in LeMars, IA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA with Father William McCarthy officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen, IA. Visitation with family present will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a rosary and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Jinx was born on March 4, 1924 to Marcel & Elizabeth (Heyman) Matgen in Remsen. He was raised and educated in Remsen, graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1942.
On June 21, 1948 he married Audrey Bird at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, IA. The couple made their home in Remsen where Jinx work as a US Mail Carrier for 50 years.
He was a member of Remsen Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, Remsen Lions Club. He served as Mayor of Remsen for 8 years and also served on the Remsen city council for 8 years. He managed the Remsen Little League baseball for 12 years. He was also instrumental in the Remsen Golf Course and Oktoberfest startup. He enjoyed Golfing, fishing, pinochle and watching his grandchildren’s sports and activities.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey of Remsen; his children, Steve (Nancy) Matgen, Tom (Mary) Matgen all of Remsen, Lisa (Chip) Tracey of Omaha, NE, Jim (Lynn) Matgen, Mary (Steve) Schneider all of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Tammy (Brian) Hoover, Brian (Kayla) Matgen, Michael (Kristen) Matgen, Sarah (Travis) Schwalbach, Audra (Sean) Nelson, Zachary (Amanda) Wurth, Thomas (Mellisa) Voigt, Andrew Voigt, Thomas Matgen, Ashley (Tyler) Johnson, Dan Matgen, Katie Matgen and Fiance Dan Self, Benjamin (Madelyn) Ayers and Austin Marcel (Morgan) Ayers; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie (Jesse) DeGroot, Langston, Logan and Alexis Hoover, Josie, Mason, Micah and Kian Matgen, Mia, Lily, Hazel and Nolan Matgen, Truman Schwalbach, Oliver Nelson, Leone Voigt, Emma, Isaach and Noah Wurth, Elliot and Audrey Ayers, Adilynn Jo, Theodore Marcel and Henry Ayers; great-great-grandson, Hayden DeGroot; sister-law, Jacque Bird of Marcus, IA.
Preceded in death by, his parents, brother, Dick (Shirley) Matgen, sister, Doris (Chet) Olmanson, brother, Clyde (Lill) Pieper, In-laws; Mary (Robert) Snyder, Jim (Bev) Bird, Bill (Arlene) Bird and Dick Bird.
Casket Bearers will be Brian and Michael Matgen, Ben and Austin Ayers, Dan and Thomas Matgen.
