Marlene Ann Bennett

August 16, 1941 — May 2, 2016

Marlene Ann Bennett, 74 years old, of Remsen, IA, died Monday, May 2, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA.
 
 Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen, IA.  Visitation with family present will be Thursday, May 5, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m., there will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
 
 Marlene was born Aug. 16, 1941, at LeMars, IA, the daughter of Joseph & Mary (Schaffer) Freking.  They lived on a farm north of Kingsley, IA and the family moved to a farm south of Remsen in 1945.  She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School.  She then attended a secretarial school. She had wanted to be a flight attendant but was too short.
 
 She worked several jobs in Omaha, NE including a life insurance company, a detective agency and Rock Island Motor Transit.  In 1968, she started at Hames Law Office in Remsen. 
 
 On Jan. 21, 1967 she married Edward Bennett. To this union a son, Dale Joseph was born.  Edward died Jan. 19, 1968 while they lived in Phoenix, AZ.  She then returned to the Remsen area and was a legal secretary.  She then operated and owned Bennett Tax Services until retiring in Dec. 2010.
 
 Marlene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, church guild and the prayer chain.  She loved music, playing the button accordion, time spent with her son, daughter-in-law, and her two special grandchildren.  Her son, Dale, his wife Joyce, and grandson Gabriel and granddaughter Jenna were the loves of her life.  She enjoyed her “sister bonding trips” several times each year with her sister Joyce and all phone calls with her brothers, sisters, friends and cousins.
Survivors include: her son Dale (Joyce) and their children Gabriel and Jenna of Spencer, IA; brother, Loren (Janice) Freking of Council Bluffs, IA, Norman (Janene) Freking of Ashton, IA; sister, Joyce (Gordon) Vavricek of Fremont, NE, brother Dennis (Sarah) Freking of Storm Lake, IA; many nieces, nephews and good friends.
 
Preceded by: her parents, her husband, and a brother, Clyde Freking, her father and mother-in-law, Dale and Jessie Bennett.
 
Casket bearers will be Rob Scheitler, Kyle Gengler, Joe Freking, Doug Ortmann, Matt Jonas and Steve Staab.
