Duane Means

January 11, 1957 — September 19, 2018

Duane E. Means, 61, of Marcus, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Unity Point Health in Sioux City, Iowa following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. Rev. Kevin Roop will officiate. Burial will follow at Marcus Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. to greet friends. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Saturday.

Duane Edward Means was born on January 11, 1957 in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of Vernon and Gladys (Geringer) Means. He attended elementary and high school in Marcus.

On October 11, 1975, Duane and Judy Hohbach were united in marriage at Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus. They lived in Cherokee for a year before settling in Marcus. Throughout the years, Duane worked as an auto and truck mechanic and as a parts manager at Hesse Chevrolet in Marcus, Nuebel Chevrolet in Le Mars and Brown Chevrolet in Cherokee. In between mechanic jobs, Duane worked at Marcus Lumber in the plumbing and heating departments. He was currently employed at Marcus Lumber as a Plumbing and HVAC specialist.

Duane was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. He enjoyed time with his grandchildren, traveling, watching NASCAR, and golfing. A devoted Chevrolet man, Duane enjoyed tinkering on his cars. He rarely rested and kept busy with many home improvement projects.

Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 42 years, Judy Means of Marcus, IA; a daughter, Jessica Means-Waldschmitt of Remsen, Iowa; a son, and his wife, Tony and Cassie Means of Hudson, IA; grandchildren, Alyssa (Nate) Denney, Sophie Waldschmitt, Sullivan Means and Finleigh Means; his parents, Vernon and Gladys Means of Marcus, IA; a sister, and her husband, Deb and Mike Heath of Sioux City, IA; a brother, Denny Means of Marcus, IA; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Humphrey and Lena Means and Bud and Alice Geringer; a brother, David Means; and several uncles.
