Vernon Means, 96, of Marcus, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Unity Point Health in Sioux City, Iowa. A private family graveside service will take place at Marcus Amherst Cemetery.
Vernon LeRoy Means was born on November 13, 1927, in Marcus, Iowa, the son of Humphrey
and Lena (Swartzwelder) Means. He attended school in Meriden and Marcus, graduating from
Marcus High School. Following high school, Vernon worked the area as a farmhand.
On October 1, 1949, Vernon and Gladys Geringer were united in marriage at St. John’s
Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Vernon worked for many years at Marcus Lumber in the
plumbing and heating department. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, traveling, attending
various country and bluegrass music festivals, spending time with grandchildren, and watching his favorite sports teams, the St. Louis Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 74 years, Gladys Means of Marcus, IA; a daughter
and her husband, Deb and Mike Heath of Sioux City, IA; daughter-in-law Judy Means of
Marcus, grandchildren, Steve Means of Le Mars, IA, Bill (Christina) Means of Alta, IA, Tony
(Cassie) Means of Hudson, IA, Jessica Means-Waldschmitt of Remsen, IA, Janet (Mark) Hill of Cherokee, Tim (Tonya) Means of Claremore, OK; Jenny (Bill) Boger of Cherokee, IA, Misty (Corey) Davis of Sgt. Bluff, IA and Melissa Means of Murray, IA; 21 great-grandchildren, 8
great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bill Means of West Sun City, AZ, Joe Means of
Inyokem, CA and Jacob Means of Sioux City, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, David, Dennis and Duane; a sister, June Cave; two infant brothers and brothers, Michael, Richard, Percy, Paul, Bobbie, Walter, James and Herbert; in-laws, Harold and Alice Geringer; and brothers-in-law, Donald Geringer, Charles Geringer and Steven Geringer.
