Nicholas R. Hansen, 86 years old, of Alton, IA, died on Monday, June 20, 2016, at Orange City Health Systems Hospital in Orange City, IA.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 23, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton. Visitation with family present will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2016. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. & a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Nic was born Nov. 12, 1929, in rural Alton, IA, the son of Nic S. & Margaret (Klein) Hansen. He was raised in the Alton area and received his education at St. Mary’s Academy in Alton from which he graduated in 1947. He then helped his father on the farm. In Jan. 1952 he entered the U.S. Army where he served in Germany until Jan. 1954.
On Feb. 24, 1954 he married Flora Portz at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hospers, IA. The couple made their home near Alton on a farm until 1991 when they moved into Alton.
Nic was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Nic was devoted to taking care of the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Alton for numerous years. He had also served on numerous boards throughout the community over the years.
Survivors include, his wife Flora of Alton; his six children, Glenn Hansen of Blencoe, IA, Karen Lechner of Dell Rapids, SD, Gary (Linda) Hansen of Alton, IA, Kathy (Mike) Plathe of Augustine, FL, Diane (Dan) Welbig of Dell Rapids, SD, Roger (Cathy) Hansen of Olathe, KS. 15 Grandchildren.
Preceded by, his parents, four sisters, Cordelia in infancy, Luella (Leo) Henrich, Florence Hansen, Frances Hansen; four brothers, Joseph (Judith) Hansen, Alfred (Iola) Hansen, Everist (Mary) Hansen and Sylvester (Dolores) Hansen.
Casket bearers will be Tony Plathe, Jeremy and Adam Hansen, Ryan, Austin and Connor Welbig.
