Richard J. Stoos, 71 years old, of Remsen, IA passed away surrounded by his family Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012 at his home in Remsen after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy & Deacon Rick Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen with an escort provided by the Patriot Riders. Graveside military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 & American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Rich was born on Nov. 26, 1940, the son of Henry & Margaret (Gollhofer) Stoos. He was raised and educated in Remsen. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1959. He then entered the US Marine Corp on July 2, 1959 and was stationed in camp Pendleton in California. He was honorably discharged on July 1, 1963. He then moved back to Remsen.
On Feb. 27, 1965, he married Suzanne Snyder at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, IA. The couple purchased Richard’s Drive-Inn in 1967 and they operated it as a family business until Sept. 1986. Rich also worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural route carrier from May 24, 1968 and retired on July 1, 2006.
Rich was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters & American Legion Post 220 of Remsen.
Survivors include: his wife Sue of Remsen; six children, Jeff (Bev) Stoos of Remsen and their children Jason, Zachary & Cassandra, Jodi (Nick) Ruba of Prior Lake, MN and their children Jordan & Ali, Brian (Sharon) Stoos of Remsen and their children Cody & Molly, Chris (Kim) Stoos of Sergeant Bluff, IA and their children Joshua & Colby, Beth (Dave) Tentinger of Remsen and their children Danika, Madison, Brianna & Bryce Tentinger, Kara (Kelly) Thompson of Colorado Springs, CO; one sister, LaNette (Thomas) Nacke of Culleoka, TN; seven brothers, Larry (Cindy) Stoos of Remsen, Stanley (Rosie) Stoos of Pensacola, FL, Robert Stoos of Remsen, Dean Stoos & his friend Linda Stansberry of Dakota City, NE, Leo (Terri) Stoos of Hinton, IA, Randy (Mary) Stoos & Doug Stoos all of Remsen.
Preceded in death by his parents, mother & father-in-law, Robert & Mary Jane Snyder, two nephews, Michael & Keith Stoos.
Casket bearers will be Jason & Zachary Stoos, Jordan Ruba, Cody Stoos, Joshua & Colby Stoos & Bryce Tentinger.
Honorary Bearers will be Cassandra Stoos, Ali Ruba, Molly Stoos, Danika, Madison & Brianna Tentinger.
