Robert Anthony Fischer, 89, of Granville, passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, at the Happy Siesta Nursing Facility.
Mass of christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville, with the Father Daniel Greving and Deacon Dan Goebel. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Granville. Grave side military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 373 and the Granville Veterans. Visitation with the family present will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus and vigil prayer service all at 5 p.m. at the Church. Robert Anthony Fischer (Bob) was born February 6, 1929 in Hospers, Iowa to Adolph and Mary (Friedrich) Fischer. When his mother passed away in 1933, his father married Mary Reichle, who had seven children. The family moved to a farm near Granville, where Robert graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1947. Robert served during the Korean War 1951-1953. A lifelong Democrat, Robert served as Granville Mayor Pro Tem from August 2006 to December 2007 and Mayor from January 2008 to December 2009. He never missed the chance to participate in his civic duty to vote and taught his children to do the same.
Robert married Evelyn Jochum in 1956 in Alton, Iowa. Evelyn passed away in 1961. He married Lorraine Foley Morris on June 1, 1963 in Granville, Iowa. The couple farmed East of Granville until 2004. Robert worked for many years at Diamond Vogel Paint in Orange City until his retirement in 2002.
Robert was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville and a charter member of the 3810 Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife Lorraine of Granville, Iowa and eight children, Mike and his wife Kandace of Peru,IN, Sharon and her husband Pete Heidesch of Remsen, Roger and his wife Lisa of Granville, Ron and his wife Deb of Alton, Duane and his wife Melinda of Blue Springs, MO, Marlene and her husband Pat Ney of Arnold’s Park, Iowa, Mary of Sioux City, Iowa and Maureen and her husband Charles Wilmot of Hermosa Beach, CA; 17 grandchildren and their spouses, Stephanie (Heidesch) and Mark Jorgenson, Matt and Melissa Heidesch, Luke Heidesch, Brandon and Stacy Fischer, Erin Fischer and special friend Corey Shearer, Mindy (Fischer) and Adam Gress, Ashley (Fischer) and Josh Jaspers, Jessica (Fischer) and Jared Rohrs, Jill (Fischer) and Andy Van Wyk, Emily (Fischer) and Jeremy Schulte, Corey and Micah Fischer, Jason and Erica Fischer, Seth and Elise Ney, Adam and Summer Ney, Jeremy and Anna Ney, Charlie Wilmot and Isabel Wilmot and 21 great-grandchildren and one sister, Lorraine Becker of Granville and step-sister-in-law Tilly Reichle of Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother; brother Clarence Fischer; three sisters Lillian (Melvin)Von Arb, Irene (Jerry) Meylor, Florence (Ferd) Pottebaum; three stepsisters, Angie (Tony) Grady, Delia Alsup, Catherine (Clarence) Pohlen, Bertie (Ray) Full and three stepbrothers, Jack, Harold (Marcie) and Lawrence (Inez) Reichle.
Casket bearers will be, Seth Ney, Matt Heidesch, Adam Ney, Luke Heidesch, Jeremy Ney, Brandon Fischer, Charlie Wilmot, Corey Fischer & Jason Fischer.
Robert has left a legacy that values hard work, honesty and family. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
