Ronald Lee Minten, age 78 of Springfield, SD and formerly of Alton, IA passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall, SD.
There will be a celebration of Life on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025 from 7-9 p.m. at the Springfield Community Center in Springfield, SD. In lieu of gifts and flowers please send donations in Ron’s name to the Springfield Golf Club, 41550 Boat Basin Dr., Springfield, SD 57062.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, Iowa with Rev. Daniel Greving officiating and Deacon Dan Goebel assisting. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton. Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, there will be a rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at the Church in Alton. Visitation will resume 1 p.m. on Friday at the church. Ron was born July 10, 1946 at Alton, IA, the son of Robert and Jackie (Den Hartog) Minten. He was raised and educated in Alton. Ron graduated from Floyd Valley High School in 1964. He then attended Westmar University graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in History degree. He enlisted in the US Air Force April 14, 1969 until he was honorably discharged Feb. 1, 1973. Over the years Ron farmed, was a US Mail Carrier, worked for ITT, owned and operated Ron’s Liquor in Alton and worked at Jellema Construction as a bookkeeper.
On Aug. 3, 1985 he married Barb (Peck) Laflin at Alton Presbyterian Church. Barb passed away June 13, 1999.
On Aug. 28, 2010 he married Joann Tucker at Orange City, IA.
Ron was a member of St. Mary’s Church. He was a member of the Floyd Post 200 American Legion of Alton and active at Dwight-Wood Post 132 American Legion in Springfield, SD. Ron served on the Alton city council in 1998 and then served as Mayor of Alton in 2004, serving for 3 terms. Ron was passionate about golfing and served on the Sioux Golf & Country Club Board and Springfield Golf Club. Ron enjoyed the communities he lived in and was active in volunteering for many events.
He is survived by his wife, Joann of Springfield, SD; his daughter, Geri (Jon) Stivers of Cedar Rapids, IA; sons, Brock (Kristen) Tucker of Springfield, SD, Clint Tucker of Brooklyn, NY; grandchildren, Joshua and Jordan Stivers, Kashius and Emersyn Tucker, Zac and Ava Nunn; his siblings, Darrell (Marilyn) Minten of Reno, NV, Sherron (Richard) Kriege of Skiatook, OK, Barb (Mark) Noteboom of Orange City, IA, Marilyn Nunn of Oelwein, IA, formerly of Alton, IA, Dawn (Dave) Welch of Jefferson, SD; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim Adema of Mitchell, SD, Mel (Norma) Adema of Omaha, NE, Don (Jan) Adema of Winthrop, MN, Joyce (Gary) Diede of Utica, SD; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Barb; his sister, Bev (Larry) Hanno; his in-laws, Henry & Hilda Adema; step-daughter, Erica Tucker; brother-in-law, Wilbur Adema.
Casket bearers will be Joshua Stivers, Jordan Stivers, Kashius Tucker, Matthew Minten, Travis Noteboom, Schuyler Noteboom, Robert Nunn & Dustin Nunn.
