Marcus, Iowa - Violet E. Snell, 91, of Marcus, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. Pastor Ron Rice will officiate. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Silver Lake Cemetery in Lake Park, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2012 at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus with the family present from 5-7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service on Saturday.
Violet Evelyn Snell was born on August 5, 1920 in Round Lake, Minnesota, the daughter of Oscar and Eva (Willardsen) Sjostrom. She received her education in Sioux Valley, Minnesota where she graduated from high school. Following school, Violet worked at her uncle’s restaurant in Pipestone, Minnesota.
On August 3, 1941 Violet and Donald V. Snell were united in marriage at Jackson, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Lake Park, Iowa. As their children grew older, Violet took a position with Campbell’s Soup in Worthington, Minnesota. She would later work at Berkeley Manufacturing in Spirit Lame, Iowa. At the age of 70, Violet retired to care for her husband. Donald passed away on January 28, 1997. Violet moved to Marcus, Iowa in 2004 to be closer to her family. She became a resident at Heartland Care Center in Marcus in 2009.
Violet was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. Most of all, she enjoyed her family and spending time with her grandchildren, as well as attending their activities. Violet researched genealogy and traced her family history extensively. She was very handy and liked the challenge of taking on a project.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Jackie Mejia and her husband Jerry of Sheldon, IA and Barbara McIntire and her husband Earl of Marcus, IA; grandchildren, Deb (Ronald) Martins of Sheldon, Iowa, Brian (Stacey) McIntire of Rock Rapids, IA, Deanna (special friend Donald Kiffmeyer) Mejia of Clear Lake, Minnesota, Michelle (Adam) Prins of Sibley, IA and Titus (Tiffany) Mejia of Sheldon, IA; great-grandchildren, Colby, Kaylee, Tearrany, Elizabeth, Jason, Hannah and Toby; 6 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Willardsen of Eugene, OR, Wilma Snell of Spencer, IA and Dorothy Sjostrom of Menahga, MN.
Violet was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; brothers, Lawrence “Jack” and Axel “Buster” Sjostrom.
