Urban J. Ahlers, 94 years old, of Granville, IA, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville with Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Granville Veterans. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb 25, 2015. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Church. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Urban was born Oct. 3, 1920 at rural Granville, IA, the son of Herman & Josephine (Koch) Ahlers. He was raised and educated in the Granville area and attended both country school and St. Mary’s School in Alton. He then served in the Army Air Corp from Feb. 19, 1943 until Jan. 5, 1946 during WWII. After being discharged from the Army he joined the family farm operation along with his brothers Arnold, Bernard, Ray, his sister Clara. He retired from farming in 1985 and remained on the family farm.
Urban was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed farming, fishing and playing pinochle.
Survivors include two sisters, Clara Ahlers of Granville, Rita Theisen of Canby, MN; one brother, Edward Ahlers of Granville; Several nieces & nephews.
Preceded in death by: his parents, brothers, Herman, Arnold, Vincent, Bernard, Raymond and Clarence (Norma) Ahlers, one sister, Helen Ahlers, two half sisters, Catherine Steffes & her husband Mike, Agatha Steffes & her husband Hank, one brother-in-law, Reynold Theisen.
