Sherwood Worden

Marcus, Iowa - Sherwood "Skip" Worden, 86, of Marcus, Iowa passed away on Monday, August 13, 2012 at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa. A Memorial Service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the Earnest - Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus, Iowa. Rev. Ethan Sayler will officiate. Skip donated his body to the University of Iowa Medical School Program and burial will follow at a later date at the Marcus Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. The Earnest - Johnson Funeral Home of Marcus is assisting Skip's family with funeral arrangements.
Sherwood Francis Worden was born on December 15, 1925 in Worthington, Minnesota, the son of Harry and Doris (Holst) Worden. He attended grade school in Iona, Minnesota and later graduated from Fulda (Minnesota) High School.
On March 22, 1944 Skip was inducted into the United States Army. He served in Europe during WWII and received the Bronze Star during the Battle of the Bulge. He earned his Honorable Discharge on April 9, 1946. Following the service Skip returned to Iona and worked at a local grain elevator.
Skip and Irene Langland were united in marriage on October 6, 1946 at Slayton, Minnesota. They made their home in Waterloo, Iowa where Skip worked as a mechanic for 13 years. They moved to Marcus, Iowa and Skip took a position at Gross Implement an Oliver tractor dealership.
In 1976 a position opened at Phillips Kiln Service in Sioux City, Iowa. This shift in careers allowed Skip and Irene to travel worldwide as he serviced and repaired manufacturing kilns. He retired in 1986.
Skip enjoyed following the lives and activities of his grandchildren. He continued to tinker on things in his retirement and could often be seen riding his bicycle in Marcus. He was a member of F.I. Goodburn American Legion Post #517 in Marcus and the Iona Veterans of Foreign Wars in Iona, Minnesota.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Irene of Marcus, IA; a son Bob Worden and his wife Peg of Le Mars, IA; a daughter, Donna Abitz and her husband Mike of Midlothian, TX; five grandchildren, Scott (Petita) Kepler, Tony Kepler, Tracy (Curt Matzdorff) Worden, Tim Worden and Alicia (Brendt Grooms) Worden; six great - grandchildren, Cheyenne, Faith, Sidney, Austin, Chloe and Emily.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
